As part of the SKILLBILL European Master Specialization Program, we are excited to introduce another course for the current semester: Air Transport. This course focuses on tackling the environmental challenges posed by aviation and exploring sustainable solutions.

Emissions from aviation significantly contribute to climate change. Aircraft burn fossil fuels, releasing CO2 and other harmful emissions like nitrogen oxides (NOx), vapor trails and clouds formed at high altitudes. These non-CO2 effects contribute twice as much to global warming as CO2 emissions and were responsible for two-thirds of aviation’s climate impact in 2018. Emissions from aviation are growing faster than any other mode of transport, making it essential to find sustainable solutions.

The Air Transport course aims to give students a thorough understanding of modern aircraft technologies and the future of sustainable aviation. Students will learn about the main features of current aircraft, including capacity, engine technology and fuels. The course also provides insights into more sustainable aircraft options, such as Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs), hydrogen and electric aircraft. Additionally, it offers a complete view of how current land infrastructures and aircraft designs need to change to support sustainable aviation.

The course program includes an introduction to the carbon footprint of aviation today, comparing light and heavy transport. It covers contemporary aircraft technology, examining the differences between short-haul and long-haul flights and the laws that apply to each. Students will explore the role, production and impact of Sustainable Aviation Fuels on the carbon footprint, including the use of electric vehicles, hydrogen cars and biofuels. The course materials include lecture slides, reading materials and additional literature, all accessible through the educational management portal, Moodle.

As part of SKILLBILL’s ongoing efforts, the Air Transport course equips students with the knowledge and skills to tackle the critical environmental challenges of aviation, helping to create a more sustainable industry.

Stay tuned for more information on our Specialization Programme and other exciting initiatives!
